We will issue you with a Statement of Competency after you have completed the course. You then take this to the Department of Transport for assessment and payment of fee.
You must be 16 years old to obtain the licence through the Department of Transport, however you can sit the course when you are 15 and a half. This does not mean you can drive a boat just yet, remember you must be 16 to be able get the licence.
The courses are valid for 6 months, so provided you can get into department of transport before it expires and after your birthday you will be able to lift the licence!
You must also declare you are medically fit to undertake this training.
The courses are delivered via an Online portal, which you will access when you sign up. This takes several hours to complete but can be done over several sittings at home. It will provide you with a great knowledge base, and a certificate required to move onto the next phase of the process.
Once the online training is complete, you can move onto the in-class theory test and then to the practical on water demonstration and assessment.
During the class theory you can brush up on any areas you didn’t quite understand, can ask questions, and have a chat about all things nautical. When you are ready you will complete the multiple choice test. This is a 100% pass mark, but you can revisit any incorrect question a second time.
Once this is complete your instructor will take you onto the water and demonstrate the following skills.
Then it’s your turn to demonstrate the above.
Once you have mastered the skills and your deemed competent, your trainer will give you your Statement of Competency, which you take to the Department of transport and Main Roads who will assess and issue you with a valid licence.
